Whom shall I fear?

Last night Sebastian Traeger gave the evening message on Psalm 27:1 and addressed the issue of the foolishness of fear in light of the gospel. Fear is more pervasive than many of us think, and ultimately when we are anxious about something we are to be cautious that we are not making something our light and our salvation--in other words, functional saviors. This could be finances, career, family, etc.

This morning I read through Hebrews 13:1-8, which actually also speaks of fear as opposed to contentment. The author warns his readers to keep free from love of money and to be content with what they have; and the reasoning behind this mindset is that God will never leave us nor forsake us. A different direction than I might originally think most natural (maybe the idea that our treasure is in heaven might have seemed more natural to me). But I think this ties well with the Sunday evening message: we should not fear anything if we trust the good news of Jesus Christ. The author of Hebrews goes on to quote Ps. 118:6:
The Lord is my helper;
I will not fear;
what can man do to me?
The Lord has promised not to forsake us, and so we should have no fear of what this world might bring or what man might do. To find run to find security in anything else means to create a functional savior that is not Christ.

General Updates:
  • Hopefully the AC will be fixed today; Dr. Heating and Air is scheduled to drop a visit.
  • Going to Paul Miller's small group today, we'll be covering Common Grace and Election.
  • Am intending to grab lunch with Strasle sometime this week.
  • Tomorrow's going to be a busy day: visiting Deepak, going to the dentist, and grabbing dinner with Jake.
Reading Updates:
  • Started reading Bernard Lewis' The Middle East, which is a concise overview of Middle Eastern history. Thought it would jog my memory a bit before I read Lion of Jordan to prepare for my study abroad trip.
