A bit late, but Jonathan Leeman preached two Sundays ago on Isaiah 40--on the greatness of God. Right at the beginning, and a constant theme throughout the sermon, were four temptations to idolize:
1. Things that entice us (i.e. beauty, romance, etc.).
2. Things that we fear (i.e. what am I anxious about?).
3. Things we trust (i.e. financial security).
4. Things we need.
I thought it was helpful to split them up this way since it allows us to systematically examine each kind of temptation and whether or not our hearts are falling for them.
Other good pointers that Jonathan made:
- You are tired and weary because you trust in the wrong things (vv. 28-30).
- In battling sin, consider the greatness of God over your idols.
