Thought I would share some poignant thoughts from Geerhardus Vos from Biblical Theology that I read today in his section "Revelation in the Period of Moses."
Speaking of the concept of expiation and its relation to the idea of "covering":
Man needs 'covering', God needs no 'covering'. God is the subject, man is the object of the act. The reason why man needs covering is something that lies in him, but it is not something that lies in man considered in itself. It creates the need of covering, because of something that is in God. The sin in man, as calling forth a reaction from the offended holiness of God, is what renders the covering necessary.
Although I'm not sure if Vos would have used this language or even intended this to be a polemic, it seems to have much bearing on discerning the inadequacy of a therapeutic understanding of sin.
Speaking of the burnt-offering:
While Scripture teaches that the punishment of sin is required by the justice of God, it never speaks of this as giving delight to God. On the contrary, that which is represented as yielding delight to Jehovah is the surrender of man's life in consecration of obedience. In this sense, therefore, we must understand the burning upon the altar.
Speaking of the distinction between sin-offerings and trespass-offerings:
Every sin offers to God what ought not to be offered, an offence, and at the same time it withholds from God what ought to have been given to Him, obedience.
General Updates:
- Had my Arabic language evaluation this morning, which was quite difficult because it was conducted in only Arabic (English was not allowed once the evaluation began).
- Was able to meet with Jesse to talk about real estate in DC.
- Going to intern/student bible study tonight at CHBC and getting to see Katie (who's back in DC for the summer for a second internship).
- Cookout was awesome; caught up with old friends and made new ones.
