This is the title F.F. Bruce gave the section Hebrews 12:12-17. The author of Hebrews exhorts his readers to make the effort to protect themselves from sin; to "strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet" (v. 13). We are called to make sure no "root of bitterness" sprouts up. The warning given is the story of Esau and how he gave up his birthright for a meal and later--when he desired the blessing--he was rejected and had no chance to repent. These are sobering things to think about. As Owen said: kill sin or it will be killing you. I think it takes passages like this, through the working of the Holy Spirit, to wake me up out of complacency and spiritual idleness.
The author poignantly calls us to "see to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God" (v. 15). The grace is God is available to us through the common avenues of the Word, prayer, and His people, but we do not take advantage of them as we ought.
